When you’re in your 20s and building your professional life, you may be trying to find your passion and your purpose through aligning it with your job. And you believe that once you get that job, everything will unlock for you. You can spend the next 30, 40, 50 years there, perfectly happy.
It’s your dream job.
When I finally got into the working world I realized this idea of finding your “dream job” and it fulfilling you to the point where nothing else matters: it was a lie.
My friend Alana Herlands has had that same disillusionment, and she and I had a conversation about our catfish moments with “dream jobs,” why the dream job culture is so pervasive, why it can be misleading and even harmful, and what can happen when you de-center work in your life.

Behind the scenes
I’m back, baby! If you listened to my last episode, “It’s okay not to be okay,” you will know—I was not okay. But slowly this past month and a half, I’ve been picking up the pieces of my life back up; learning some hard lessons about work and burnout; and setting up some healthy boundaries and new frameworks for myself.
It has been incredibly hard, and I might talk about it in a future episode, but for now, I am in a much better place. Thank you to everyone who reached out to me, and also to those who shared their similar struggles with me. I see you, I hear you, and I’m there with you!
So honestly, I needed this episode. You’ll know why when you listen, but editing this and hearing a conversation Alana and I had months back made me cry, cry, cry. Past me and Alana were definitely speaking to present me and Alana, and reminding us about the importance of full identities outside of our work.
As I was developing the idea for this podcast last year, I actually asked Alana if she wanted to do it with me; we had already had so many meaningful and deep conversations about being in our 20s, and I felt this was right up her alley. And for a while, she was the one developing this with me!
Alana was the one who actually suggested the name Tired In My Twenties. Life picked up for her, and she couldn’t host with me anymore, but she did let me keep the name. I am really glad we were able to do an episode together, and hopefully more in the future. She has a lot of 20-something wisdom to share, especially when it comes to work.
When we’re thinking about how to live our dream lives, this podcast is definitely part of it for me. I’m glad to be back and working on these stories again for all of you, and grateful you’re all on this journey with me.
