Are you ready to move out?
Leaving your family home is a big step.
On the one hand, in your 20s this is a big move forward that can be really exciting.
On the other hand, it’s one of those milestones of adulthood that everyone thinks about, but when you’re faced with actually doing it, there can be a lot of confusion and stress.
That’s what one of my best friends Isabel Gouse, or Izzy, thought when we graduated college and she had to look for her first apartment.
Izzy is going to tell you how she looked for a place, the challenges she and her partner faced because of their finances, and how she made her first apartment her first home, especially as her life has shifted and changed in her 20s.

Behind the scenes
Izzy was one of the first people I interviewed for this podcast.
Her interview was in the beginning of last June. 2021. That’s how long I’ve been thinking about making this podcast! So if there was ever an example of “never too late,” this is one of them. Thank you Izzy, for being so willing to be one of my first guinea pigs in this whole experiment, and then for not being even a little bit salty you’ve had to wait more than a year for this story to come out.
This is a good time to tell you a little bit more about the behind the scenes of Izzy being my accountability partner. I knew that, to get this podcast off the ground, I needed someone to keep me in check. Someone who would always be expecting something from me. I need that outside pressure to kick into gear.
I told Izzy that on FaceTime one night, and she volunteered herself. I warned her that I would be working on stuff every week that I would need help reviewing. And she said she had no problem with it. Truly, one can’t ask for a better best friend.
In the credits of every episode, you will hear “Special thanks to Isabel Gouse.” That’s because Izzy reads every script I write, and so far she’s also listened to every edited episode before it comes out. She is Listener 0. And it has meant the world to me. Who knows where this podcast would be without her?
I knew Izzy would be perfect for this episode because she is serious about her apartment. Every poster she hangs, every candle she lights, and every book she adds to her shelf, it adds to this collection of her. Most everything is an intentional choice. Also I remember the stress and pain she had looking for that first apartment, and I knew she couldn’t be alone. So her story was a great case study for other people in their 20s just trying to make it work.
